Uniting a Community Through Social Media: BioMarin Pharmaceuticals

The marketplace situation:

  • Patients with the rare genetic disorder, Phenylketonuria, or PKU, often feel isolated due to:
    • The rarity of their disease
    • The symptoms of their disease - difficulty concentrating, greater moodiness, slower reaction time
    • The strict protein diets they must follow
    • Patients' physical distance from each other and thus, the difficulty in finding in-person support

The Compass solution:

  • In developing the site, Compass leveraged social media functionality to provide a forum for those affected by PKU to share their experiences
  • A series of eMail blasts were sent to registered members of the PKU community encouraging them to submit photos of themselves and their immediate family for use on the site
  • In addition to sharing thoughts and asking questions, members of PKU.com can join chat rooms and blogs, create groups and events, upload recipes and pictures
  • Search engine optimization (SEO) features were also incorporated to drive traffic to the site

RESULTS

Within the first three weeks of launch, PKU.com experienced:

  • More than 5,500 unique visitors
  • Nearly 20% of visitors returned
  • 86 members registered
  • 18 blog posts were created
  • 1 new group was created
  • 15 events were uploaded
  • 143 photo albums were created
